The oldest mosque

South Kalimantan's oldest mosque, founded in the sixteenth century by Sultan Suriansyah, the first Muslim sultan of Banjar, after his conversion, and so a witness to the beginning of Islam in this part of Borneo. It stands on the bank of the Kuin River in the old Banjar quarter. The mosque is built entirely of wood in traditional Banjar style, with a steep tiered roof, an old carved wooden minbar and pillars of hard ironwood that resists water for centuries. Nearby is the tomb of Sultan Suriansyah and his family, which people visit to pay respects and pray. Entry is free. Non-Muslims visit outside prayer times in modest dress. It lies on the boat route to the floating market, so make it a stop on the way back from Lok Baintan, or drive from the centre in a quarter of an hour.
