Sümeg Castle is a medieval castle above the town of Sümeg in Veszprém County, western Hungary, on top of a hill called «Castle Hill» about 32 km north of Lake Balaton. It lies about 24 km in a straight line from the Festetics Palace in Keszthely. The castle was built in the mid or late 13th century under King Béla IV and later given to the Archdiocese of Veszprém. It was expanded several times and fortified in the 15th century, when its second tower was built. Irregular in shape and running north to south, it measures 125 by 80 metres, and a walled path leads to an inner gatehouse opening onto the main courtyard. Today it is the town's main attraction. Yellow stone walls and a square tower crown a green grassy hill, looking from afar like a crown above the town. At night the walls glow golden above the dark hill, and from the broad courtyard the view sweeps over the hills and town. The climb up is steep, and a shuttle runs in season. In summer the courtyard hosts knights' shows and medieval activities.
