The largest town on Brač and its main port, and the **island''s gateway**: every ferry from Split docks here, so nearly every visitor passes through it. The town itself is quiet and modest — a half-moon harbour, a front of stone houses, a pebble beach and a church. It rivals neither Bol to the south in fame nor in setting, but it is **cheaper, closer and less crowded**, and many visitors stay here and travel out from it. What genuinely distinguishes it is on its edge: **Supetar cemetery**, among the strangest things on the island. It was developed in the early twentieth century by the local sculptor **Ivan Rendić** — the first modern Croatian sculptor — and filled with finely carved marble tombs, among them the **Petrinović** family mausoleum in the form of a **domed Byzantine chapel**, by the sculptor **Toma Rosandić**. The cemetery is open and people walk in it. Note: Supetar is **not a destination in itself** so much as a practical base — buses from here reach Bol, Milna and Pučišća.

The island has **three ports**, each for a different purpose. **Supetar** is the main one: a car ferry from **Split** roughly hourly in summer, taking about **50 minutes**, and the default with a car. **Bol** takes a **passenger-only catamaran** from Split and Hvar in summer — faster, and it lands you in the town you actually want, but **with no car**. **Milna** is a small port for seasonal ferries. ⚠ The common mistake is landing at **Supetar** assuming it is near Zlatni Rat — they are **about 40 km apart on a mountain road**, roughly an hour by bus. ⚠ Ferries are **far less frequent outside summer** and are cancelled in strong wind.
