Indonesia's longest bridge when it opened in 2009, running more than five kilometres over the Madura Strait to link Surabaya with Madura Island, with a cable-stayed central span between two tall towers. Its name combines Surabaya and Madura. Visitors cross by car in minutes, free for cars since 2018, with lovely views over the sea and ships, and the bridge is lit in colours at night. On the Surabaya side are restaurants and spots to watch and photograph it at sunset; on the Madura side waits an island with a distinctive culture, famous for traditional bull races and for spiced fried duck. Crossing by car is free; stopping on the bridge is forbidden for safety, and pedestrians are usually not allowed. Make it a half-day trip: cross in the late afternoon, take a short look around Bangkalan on the Madura side, then come back to watch the lit bridge from the Surabaya side over dinner.
