A red sandstone bluff on the bank of the Ahja river in south-eastern Estonia, rising about twenty-two metres, among the country's best-known natural formations and among the most present in its national story. The name means literally the great hall of the sky, a name from folklore rather than a geographical description. The bluff was held to be a sacred place in old Estonian belief, and stories about spirits and powers attach to it; it appears in modern Estonian literature and music as a symbol of the national landscape. The rock itself is Devonian sandstone about four hundred million years old, formed when the region was a sea floor. The river cut into it slowly and exposed the layers, and their red colour comes from iron oxides. Estonia is a largely flat country — its highest point is only about three hundred and eighteen metres — which is why a twenty-two metre bluff is a national landmark. Scale is always relative. Practical points: entry is free and the paths are marked and include boardwalks. The distance from Tallinn is about a hundred and eighty kilometres — a day trip by car, or combined with a visit to Tartu. The rock is fragile and protected — do not climb it or carve into it.

On the Ahja river, south-east Estonia
By car about two and a half hours each way, which is too far for a casual stop. It is better combined with Tartu, Estonia's second and university city, only about forty kilometres from the area. Public transport to the site itself is limited.
Yes — Väike Taevaskoda on the same river a short walk away, smaller but which many find finer because it is quieter. The riverside path links the two and takes about half an hour on foot, so see both while you are there.
