Svirzh Castle is a fortified noble residence in the village of Svirzh in the Lviv region of western Ukraine, on a rise above a wide lake. It is one of the most beautiful castles in the area, with its reflection on the water, and often appears in films and photographs. The Świrski noble family built it in the 15th century, and inside is a small church dating from 1546. It was rebuilt completely in the 17th century for its new owner, Count Aleksander Cetner, and was surrounded on every side by moats, lakes and marshes. It burned in 1648 and stood in ruins for many years, was restored in 1907, burned again in 1914, and has been restored several times since. You reach it over a stone bridge across the moat and see a white building with square towers, red tiled roofs and stepped Renaissance gables. The finest view is from the opposite shore of the lake, when the castle is mirrored on the water at sunrise or sunset. Lviv's Market Square is about 36 km away in a straight line, and Olesko Castle about 49 km. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the Lviv region, and opening can change at short notice, so read the current advice before you plan.
