The Szalajka Valley is a mountain valley at Szilvásvárad in Heves County, northern Hungary, one of the loveliest and best-equipped parts of the Bükk Mountains for walkers. It lies about 21 km in a straight line from the city of Eger. The valley took its name in the 19th century from its people's main trade, burning wood to make potash. Wild brown trout have long lived in its stream and have been farmed here for about 100 years, and smoked grilled trout is a local speciality. The stream rises from karst springs, one emerging from a small dripstone cave that can be entered for a short stretch, with the Istállós-kő cliff above. The Fátyol waterfall, or «Veil Falls», tumbles over mossy limestone terraces among dense green trees, and small still lakes along the valley mirror the forest. Broad meadows open between the wooded hills. A narrow-gauge forest railway carries visitors up the valley, and you can walk back down. The path is easy and family-friendly.
