Tafí del Valle is a mountain town in western Tucumán province, 126 kilometres from the capital, in the heart of the Tafí valley between the Aconquija range to the south and the Cumbres Calchaquíes to the north. The valley is an old pass linking the Calchaquí valleys in the west with the great plains to the east, and its old name, Taktikllakta, is said to mean «town of the magnificent entrance» in the Cacán language. Green pastures, mountains and La Angostura reservoir surround the town, with the Los Menhires archaeological reserve at El Mollar on its shore. The town is known for local cheeses and dairy and its mild summers, long a retreat for people from Tucumán escaping the city heat. The road up from Tucumán is one of the province's finest, climbing through humid forest to the high valley, often in mist. Wandering the town is free.
