Tai Long Wan, «Big Wave Bay», is a 3 km-wide bay on the east coast of the Sai Kung Peninsula in Hong Kong, about 25 km northeast of Tsim Sha Tsui in a straight line. It is considered one of the most beautiful places in Hong Kong and is a well-known surf spot. Four main beaches line the bay: Sai Wan, Ham Tin Wan, Tai Wan and Tung Wan, and three tiny islands sit near its centre. There are small villages in the area, the oldest being Tai Long Tsuen, founded more than 250 years ago, and Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts have been found at Ham Tin. Soft white sand stretches between tall green hills in front of clear turquoise water where ocean waves break, with the pointed summit of Sharp Peak above the bay. From the hill trails the bay looks like a tropical beach far from the city. Visitors reach it on foot along the MacLehose Trail over several hours, or by boat from Sai Kung, and spend the day on the sand. Swimming is unsafe because of strong rip currents all year, and there are no lifeguards, so stay on the beach.
