A row of five elegant green houses built in 1921 on the old Taipa waterfront, once homes of well-off Portuguese and Macanese families; they were restored to recreate life in the first half of the twentieth century and opened as a museum in 1999. Four of the houses show rooms furnished in period style with their furniture, photographs and household objects, telling the story of the Macanese, whose language and food blend Portuguese and Asian roots, while the fifth hosts exhibitions and events. The houses once faced the sea, but land reclamation between Taipa and Coloane turned the water in front of them into a small wetland that mirrors the houses, and every autumn the Lusofonia festival of Portuguese-speaking cultures is held outside. Entry is free, with the museum open from 10:00 to 19:00 and closed on Mondays, per visitor guides. It is one of Macau's prettiest photo spots and pairs with Taipa Village a few steps away.
