Changsha's best-known old street, a cobbled lane near the bank of the Xiang River lined with traditional houses of white and grey walls and upturned roofs; restored along with the historic quarter around it, it has become one of the city's favourite places to stroll and eat. It is lined with snack, sweet and souvenir shops and cafés, and at its end stands the residence of the Han-dynasty scholar Jia Yi, exiled to Changsha from 177 to 174 BC, rebuilt many times on the same spot, while old gateways and branching lanes fill the quarter. Beside it run Pozi Street, famous for Changsha's popular food, and the Huangxing Road pedestrian shopping street, so the whole area makes an evening of shops, restaurants and lights. The street is free and always open, per visitor guides. Changsha's signature dishes are black «stinky tofu» and fiercely spicy food, much of it made with pork or lard, so ask before ordering.
