Taipus de Fora is the best-known beach on the Maraú peninsula, about 7 km from Barra Grande. Coral reefs off the beach trap the water at low tide, forming clear natural pools, some up to a kilometre long, good for snorkelling and watching fish. The pools only appear at low tide, best around new and full moon, and are at their finest from September to February, so check the tide table before you go. Similar pools form off Algodões beach on the same peninsula. It is reached overland from Barra Grande, and the beach is free.
