Takachiho Gorge is a deep valley on the Gokase River in the town of Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, about 25 km southeast of Mount Aso and 57 km east of Kumamoto in a straight line. The gorge formed from lava deposited by eruptions of Mount Aso, which cooled quickly into regular rock columns and was then cut by the river into a V-shaped valley. Its cliffs average 80 metres high, reach 100 metres in places and run for 7 km. It was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1934. Near its middle is the 17-metre Manai Falls, one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. Calm turquoise water flows between walls of tightly packed basalt columns covered in moss and ferns, Manai Falls drops from the cliff edge straight into the river, and high stone bridges cross the gorge above. Visitors walk a path along the gorge rim of about a kilometre and rent rowing boats to get close to the falls. From mid-July to mid-September the area around the falls is lit until 10 pm.
