Tamarind Falls, also known as the Seven Cascades, is a series of seven waterfalls on the Tamarin River in southwest Mauritius, two kilometres northwest of the large lake Mare aux Vacoas. It is among the island's finest natural sights, drawing walkers and adventure lovers to its green valleys. The river drops through a deep forested valley, with falls and natural pools following one another between volcanic walls. You cannot see the whole series from one spot, as each cascade reveals itself on the way down. Water strength varies with the rain, and so does the safety of the pools, some being fit for swimming at one time and not at another. The walk usually starts from the top of the valley, going down among rocks and grass to green pools cut into the stone, some as round as basins. Water falls from dark walls into a wide pool that mirrors the mountains. Longer tours include jumps and rope descents at some falls, which call for fitness and experience. It is 12 km in a straight line from Flic en Flac and 18 km from Rochester Falls. Sources recommend a licensed guide, who knows the route and which pools are safe that day. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and food, and avoid rainy days, when rocks turn slippery and the water can rise quickly. Start early in the morning so you are back before dark.
