Protected rainforest on the slopes of the Tangkoko volcano east of Manado, one of Indonesia's best places to see wildlife. Its most famous resident is the tarsier, one of the world's smallest primates, a palm-sized creature with enormous eyes that emerges from fig trees at dusk. The walk with a local guide through the forest shows black crested macaques, which live in big troops and exist only in north Sulawesi, colourful hornbills and cuscus. It usually ends at a tarsier tree just before sunset to watch them wake. Foreigners pay an entry fee plus the compulsory guide fee, arranged at the entrance in Batu Putih village. Trails are dirt and can be muddy. Plan a half day ending at sunset, or stay a night at a village lodge for a morning walk too. Bring closed shoes and insect repellent, and keep quiet near the animals.
