Belitung island's most famous and beautiful beach: soft white sand, clear, calm turquoise water, and giant smooth granite boulders scattered along the shore and in the sea, some the size of houses, a scene unlike any other beach in Indonesia. The beach became famous across Indonesia after scenes of the 2008 film The Rainbow Troops were shot here, adapted from Andrea Hirata's novel about his childhood on Belitung, and it now draws visitors from all over the country. You can clamber over the boulders, move between them and swim in the clear pools they enclose. The beach is free, with small seafood restaurants and simple parking. The water is calm on most days of the year, good for swimming and photographs. The best time is late afternoon until sunset. Belitung is a quiet island reached by an hour's flight from Jakarta, and boat trips leave from here to Lengkuas island and its lighthouse.

Fly from Jakarta to Tanjung Pandan in about an hour, then drive about forty minutes to the beach. Renting a car is best, as public transport is scarce.
