A mountain park of rain and cloud forest at the head of the Orosi Valley, one of Costa Rica's wettest places, receiving some six to seven metres of rain a year, so many rivers, streams and waterfalls flow from it, supplying the region with water and power. Short trails wind among trees draped in moss, ferns and bromeliads, with lookouts over slender waterfalls dropping from the facing mountains and the clear, rocky Orosi River running between big boulders. The park is quiet, with few visitors compared with others. It is one of the best birding spots near the capital, with hundreds of species including hummingbirds, tanagers and sometimes quetzals higher up, plus monkeys, coatis and butterflies. Early morning is the best time to visit. It is usually combined with the Orosi Valley and Lankester Garden in one day. Bring a rain jacket even in the dry season. Never feed or touch wild animals, and watch them from a distance.
