Taquaruçu is a rural district of Palmas, capital of Tocantins, about thirty kilometres from the city, with some 5,500 residents. Known as Palmas' «hill country», it is the highest and coolest part of the municipality and an ecotourism destination. It was created in 1988 as a municipality named Taquarassu do Porto and was absorbed into Palmas when the new capital was founded in 1989. It is famous for its many waterfalls, such as the Taquaruçu, Roncadeira and Evilson falls, and for natural pools, especially in the Vai Quem Quer valley. Among its best-known activities are abseiling down the waterfalls and the Voo do Pontal zip line, 1,300 metres long and more than two hundred metres high, one of the largest in Brazil. Its people are also known for crafts made from «golden grass», babassu and local seeds. Go in the dry season with a local guide.
