A zoo on a hillside overlooking Sydney Harbour, opened in 1916, whose Aboriginal name means beautiful view, and from between its enclosures come views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge that no other zoo can match. The zoo shows thousands of animals from Australia and the world: koalas, kangaroos, platypus and Tasmanian devils, along with giraffes, elephants, gorillas and tigers, bird and sea lion shows, and daily keeper talks. The most enjoyable way there is the ferry from Circular Quay, about twelve minutes, then a cable car up the hill over the zoo, then a walk back down among the animals to the ferry wharf. Adult tickets are A$57 at the gate and from A$51.30 online, per the zoo. It opens daily from 9.30 am until 4.30 or 5 pm depending on the season, and needs at least half a day.
