Tasitolu is a set of three shallow saline lakes on the coast of Timor-Leste west of Dili. Calm water reflects the dry hills, flocks of Australian pelicans float on the lakes, white egrets wade at the edges, and a beach lies close by on the sea. Its Tetum name means «three waters». It is a 700-hectare protected area, listed as a Wetland of National Significance and an Important Bird Area that shelters several near-threatened species. In some years the water of the lakes turns red, probably because of red algae. Its beach has dive sites with clear water and no currents. You walk around the lakes watching pelicans and wading birds, take in the water and hills, then go down to the beach to swim or snorkel. The lakes are about 8 km west of central Dili, near the airport, on the Dili–Kupang road. Early morning is the best time for birds. Bring binoculars, water and a hat.
