Tata Castle is a red-roofed stone castle on the edge of Lake Öreg in the town of Tata, its walls and tower mirrored in the still water, surrounded by gardens and lakeside paths. It was built in the mid-14th century on the northern tip of the lake. It flourished under Kings Sigismund and Matthias Corvinus as a royal summer retreat and favoured residence. It later burned and was restored, and its walls show the Romantic touches of the Esterházy family who lived here. Today it houses a museum, and scenes from films and television series have been shot here. You walk the path round the lake to see the castle from every side, cross the bridge inside to visit the museum, and in winter thousands of migrating birds gather on the lake, drawing birdwatchers. The town also has old watermills and a large English landscape garden near the lake. It is about 800 m in a straight line from central Tata and makes a day trip from Budapest.
