A wide reservoir north-east of Tbilisi, created in the 1950s, which locals call the Tbilisi Sea, their escape on hot summer days. Its blue water lies between bare golden hills, with small beaches, pools, cafés and walking and cycling paths on its shores. On the hill above the lake stands the vast Chronicle of Georgia, tall stone pillars carved with scenes from the country's history and Bible stories, with the best view over the lake and city. In summer people swim at designated spots, hire boats and hold barbecue picnics on the grass. The lake is free; some private beaches and pools charge entry. Swim only at guarded spots, and the sun is strong with little shade, so bring a hat and water. It is fairly quiet outside the summer holidays. It is about a quarter of an hour by taxi from the centre and pairs with the Chronicle of Georgia in half a day.
