Sabará's Municipal Theatre, formerly the «Casa de Ópera», is a historic building in Sabará, the town next to Belo Horizonte; it is the second-oldest theatre in Brazil still in use, is listed by the national heritage institute and was named one of the «Seven Wonders of the Estrada Real». Its facade is plain, but inside wooden galleries rise on three levels on the Italian model, with 41 boxes on the first two levels, a popular gallery above and a stalls area, seating 400 in all. It opened on 2 June 1819, replacing a first house built in 1770, with two plays celebrating the birth of a Portuguese princess. It was refurbished in 1839, and in 1885 it gained a drop curtain painted by the artist Johann Georg Grimm. Emperor Pedro I visited in 1831 and Pedro II in 1881, famous opera companies played there at its height between 1840 and 1870, and its acoustics were praised. Check visiting and show times.
