The Theatro São João is the most important cultural venue in Sobral, Ceará. It was built at the initiative of the Sociedade Cultural União Sobralense, a society founded in 1875 to promote the city's cultural life. The theatre opened on 26 September 1880 with a comedy-drama staged by amateur actors from Sobral. More than a century later it underwent a full restoration and reopened on 29 December 2004 in the presence of the then culture minister, the musician Gilberto Gil, and thousands of residents, with a performance of Samuel Beckett's «Waiting for Godot». The national heritage service has listed the theatre, and it forms part of Sobral's historic centre. It hosts plays, concerts and cultural events through the year, so check its programme, or simply admire its elegant façade on a walk around the old town.
