Sinsheim if cars and the supersonic aircraft appeal, Speyer if space, giant aircraft and the submarine do. The two are alike in spirit and different in collection, and the combined ticket settles the question if you have two days.
A train from Heidelberg to Sinsheim Museum/Arena station, a few minutes' walk from the museum. The journey takes about an hour and is easier than the map suggests.
Largely yes: the exhibits are huge and close at hand, and boarding the aircraft is a thrill for older children. But the stairs inside the Concorde and Tu-144 are steep and narrow, and there are military exhibits that younger children may need explaining.

The Technik Museum Sinsheim is the only place in the world where both supersonic airliners stand side by side: the Anglo-French Concorde and the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144, each mounted on the roof at a take-off angle, and each open to climb into and walk through. The two were built in the same race during the 1960s, and both projects ended in commercial failure — seeing them next to each other explains that race better than any book. The museum is far wider than those two aircraft, though: vast halls holding more than three thousand exhibits, from Formula 1 and classic cars and steam locomotives to tanks, military aircraft and enormous engines. The arrangement is dense and deliberately crowded — you walk among the exhibits rather than behind ropes, and most are within arm's reach. It and its twin at Speyer are run together and sold on a combined ticket valid for two days, with about half an hour's drive between them. Anyone with only one day must choose: Sinsheim for the two supersonic aircraft and the cars, Speyer for the Boeing 747 and the Buran space shuttle.
