A powerful fall

Bali's easiest-to-reach and best-known waterfall near the south, on the Petanu River in the village of Kemenuh, about twelve kilometres south of Ubud and an hour from Kuta. The water plunges powerfully from some fifteen metres amid dense green forest into a wide pool below. At the top of the valley are a viewing platform and cafes overlooking the falls, from which a long staircase leads down to the bottom, where visitors get close to the water and its spray. At the top there are swings and photo platforms, paid separately. The view is best in the rainy season, when the water is strongest, but swimming is unsafe then. Entry is about thirty thousand rupiah. The stairs to the bottom are long and the climb back is tiring in the heat, so bring water and non-slip shoes. Follow the guards' rules on swimming, which may be banned after heavy rain. Bali's tourist levy is separate. Come in the morning before the crowds; an hour or two is enough. Many combine it with the Ubud Monkey Forest or the craft village of Sukawati on the way.

On calm days some visitors swim in the pool, but the current is strong, and after heavy rain swimming is banned. Follow the guards' rules and keep away from where the water crashes down.
