The smoking falls

A powerful waterfall dropping about fifty metres in the Kerinci highlands, whose name means smoking falls, because the thick spray flung from its plunge looks like rising smoke, wrapping the place in a white cloud and rainbows in the sun. From the car park a short stair leads to a viewing platform facing the falls, and you can go down closer to the base if you don't mind getting wet. The forest around is dense and green, and the air cool and fresh. Entry is a small fee of about ten thousand rupiah. The stairs are slippery from the spray, so take care, and bring a waterproof jacket. The falls are close to the Kayu Aro tea estates and the climbers' route to Mount Kerinci, an easy stop on the way needing half an hour to an hour.
