Temaikèn is a biopark owned by a non-profit foundation, covering more than 34 hectares in Escobar, north of Buenos Aires, combining zoo, botanical garden, aquarium and natural history museum to show nature and help protect it. Its name is Tehuelche: tem, land, and aikèn, life, «land of life». It has four areas: native wildlife, with caimans, tapirs, capybaras and the maned wolf, and Patagonian habitats from condors and pumas to guanacos; Africa, with flamingos, pelicans, zebras, hippos, cheetahs and lemurs; Asia, with tigers and fruit bats; and a large aquarium. The animals live in wide enclosures modelled on their habitats, seen from paths among trees and lakes. It opens Wednesday to Sunday and holidays, and tickets are bought online in advance, as places are limited. Allow at least half a day and arrive in the morning.
