**A Roman temple standing with its columns in the middle of a modern street — with the remains of a Renaissance palace built inside it** — at the heart of Mérida. It was built in the **1st century AD** in the municipal forum, ⚠ **and the name is wrong**: **it was not Diana's but a temple of the imperial cult** — ✅ **the label given by 17th-century antiquarians and never shaken off**. ⚠ **Its survival has an odd cause**: **in the 16th century the Count of los Corbos built a palace inside the temple** — **using its columns as walls**; ✅ **and the new building protected them from looting**. ✅ **Most of the palace was removed in the 20th century** ⚠ **but part was deliberately left** — **as witness to the story**. ✅ **The temple stands open in the street, free, and lit at night.**

**Because stripping away everything later erases the monument's history — a central argument in conservation.** ⚠ **The old position**: **19th-century restoration aimed to «return a building to its original state»** — ✅ **removing every later addition**, **and rebuilding what was missing by conjecture**; ⚠ **which erased whole layers of history**, **and produced buildings «purer» than they had ever been**. ✅ **The modern position**: **every layer is part of the building's story** — ⚠ **and the palace built inside the temple is not a disfigurement but **the reason the temple survived**; **removing it entirely erases the explanation**. ✅ **So part was left as witness** — **from which a visitor understands why these columns and not others remain**. ✅ **The general principle in modern conservation charters** (the Venice Charter of 1964 and after): ⚠ **restoration must be distinguishable from the original**, **must not falsify a state that never existed**, **and must respect the contributions of all periods**. ✅ **Comparable cases**: **the mosque of Córdoba with its cathedral in the middle**, **the Temple of Minerva in Assisi with its Baroque interior** — ⚠ **all deliberate decisions**, **and all contested**.
