Tendal da Lapa is an architectural complex in the Lapa district of western São Paulo that in the 1940s was a major centre for storing and distributing meat to the city, and later became a cultural and public-service space that keeps its old industrial buildings. Its cultural life began in 1989, when a local theatre group staged what it called a «cultural invasion» of the derelict building and named it the «Dream Factory». It was made official in December 1992 and protected as municipal heritage on 30 June 2007. For decades it has offered free theatre shows and dance, music and sports workshops, many run by volunteers, and it also houses the Lapa district administration and public services. A visit shows a side of the city's grassroots cultural life away from the tourist districts; check the programme before you go.
