Indonesia's second-longest river.
Samarinda's frontage on the Mahakam, Indonesia's second-longest river and the lifeline of East Kalimantan, a long promenade and gardens along the bank where families gather in the evening to watch the sunset and the boats and barges carrying coal and goods on the wide river. The promenade has seating, children's play areas and stalls selling local food such as amplang, crunchy fish crackers, and drinks. From the nearby pier, tourist boats run evening river cruises past the lit Baitul Muttaqien mosque and the bridges. The promenade is free, and boat trips are moderately priced. It is loveliest after the late afternoon. Come just before sunset, take a boat to see Baitul Muttaqien from the river, then try the food at the stalls.
