Black sulphur mud.
The Barreiro complex in Araxá, Minas Gerais, brings together the Grand Hotel, the thermal baths and the springs on grounds of about 450,000 square metres. The hotel opened in 1944 under President Getúlio Vargas to house a casino, but the casino lasted only two years until gambling was banned in Brazil, while the baths carried on as a natural spa. The complex is set in gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx and has been listed as historic heritage by the Minas Gerais state heritage institute since 1989. Treatments include black sulphurous mineral mud baths, a pool of warm radioactive water and wellness therapies. Around the hotel is the Fonte Dona Beja, a radioactive-water spring with free access, linked to a nineteenth-century local legend about the beauty of Ana Jacinta de São José, along with the sulphurous Fonte Andrade Júnior. Check prices and opening times with the complex before visiting.
