Copahue is a small village at about two thousand metres at the foot of the Copahue volcano, at the end of Provincial Route 27 near Caviahue. It grew from 1930 around hot springs whose healing qualities the Pehuenche people had known long before, and its thermal complex is counted among Argentina's leading spa centres. The place looks like another planet: lagoons of hot mud, pools of warm green water, steam and vents puffing from the ground, among volcanic rock and snow-covered mountains. The complex offers baths, mud baths, steam rooms and a range of treatments; nearby, Las Máquinas has its own steam vents, and trips run toward the volcano's crater and its acid lake. The complex opens only in summer, from 1 December to late April, as snow buries the village the rest of the year, and each service is paid separately.
