The Circus is a small round square at the heart of Basseterre, the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis, modelled on Piccadilly Circus in London. A green clock tower of decorated iron stands in the middle, with colonial houses with balconies and palms around it. The clock tower is the Berkeley Memorial, put up in the 19th century. Old postcards show the square with the same palms and tower in the early 20th century. Basseterre is one of the oldest towns in the eastern Caribbean and looks over a harbour where cruise ships dock. You stand at the square watching the green tower in the traffic, with painted houses and wooden balconies around you. Independence Square, the market and the waterfront are close by. The upper balconies of the cafes around the square give a fine view over it. The Circus is in central Basseterre, a few minutes' walk from the cruise pier. It is open and free. The square is busy with cars, so take care crossing, and keep your belongings safe on cruise-ship days.
