**Because the sea was the source of danger rather than of livelihood โ a general Greek pattern.** โ **The problem**: in the centuries before the 19th, **the northern Aegean was the theatre of continual pirate raids** โ **and coastal villages were easy targets**: visible from the sea, quickly reached, **and lootable with a withdrawal before any help arrived**. โ **And the danger was not only theft but abduction** โ the taking of people themselves. โ **The solution**: **building the principal settlements inland** โ **in a valley invisible from the sea**, hours' walk from the coast, **so that attacking them was slow and costly** and gave the inhabitants time to flee or fortify. โ **Hence Theologos was Ottoman Thassos's capital** โ in the heart of the southern mountain. โ **The pattern is general in Greece**: on many islands the **chora** sits **deliberately away from its port** (the *skala*) โ **the skala for work and the chora for living**. โ **Then the equation reversed** in the 20th century: **piracy vanished and tourism arrived**, **so the weight moved to the coast** โ **and the inland villages emptied**, which is why Theologos is so quiet today.

**Thassos's historic capital: a single village strung along an inland valley, deliberately far from the sea** โ about 50 km from Limenas, in the island's mountainous south. โ **Its inland position is no accident**: it was **the island's capital in the Ottoman period**, **built away from the coast and hidden in the valley** โ **protection against the pirate raids** that swept the northern Aegean. The village is **one long ribbon** running for kilometres along both sides of the road: **stone houses with stone-slab roofs**, **courtyards behind high walls**, and **olive and walnut orchards**. โ It has the **church of Saint Demetrios** with a stone roof and a wooden bell tower, and a **folklore museum** in a traditional house. โ **It is authentic and alive** โ not a village restored for visitors. โ But it is **far**, and there is nothing in it "to visit".
