Tianjin's largest museum, whose roots go back to a museum founded in the city in 1918, one of China's earliest; in 2012 it moved to its modern building in the Tianjin Cultural Center, with more than 64,000 square metres, and it ranks among China's national first-class museums. Its collections hold about 200,000 objects, including ancient bronzes, ceramics, jade, Chinese calligraphy and painting, seals, writing implements and coins, Shang-dynasty oracle bones bearing the earliest known Chinese writing, and Dunhuang manuscripts. Other galleries tell the story of modern Tianjin, from a port on the Grand Canal to a city of foreign concessions and then an industrial city, through photographs, maps and models, and around it the Cultural Center holds art and natural history museums, a library and a theatre. Entry is free with a booking, with opening from 9:00 to 16:30 and closure on Mondays, per visitor guides. Bring your passport, as bookings are made by name.
