Tianjin's largest public park, about 127 hectares of lakes and islands in Nankai District, opened in July 1951 on a site once known as «Green Dragon Pond», where students of the nearby Nankai and Beiyang universities had swum in summer before. Bridges link its islands and visitors take boats on its lakes; in its south lies the Tianjin Zoo, opened in 1980, and it holds the Kobe Garden, a Japanese garden funded by Kobe, Tianjin's Japanese sister city, completed in 1989 and counted as the first large Japanese garden in mainland China. Entry is free, while boats, rides and the zoo cost extra, and it is open from early morning to evening, per visitor guides.
