A towering mountain above Zhangjiajie city whose name means «Heaven's Gate Mountain», after Tianmen Cave, a vast natural arch piercing the mountain, 131.5 m high and reached by a stairway of 999 steps. Visitors ride up from the city centre on a 7,455 m cableway that climbs 1,279 m and is billed as one of the world's longest mountain cableways, or take Tongtian Avenue, a road that winds 11 km through 99 bends to the cave. At the top are walkways clinging to the cliff edge, some with glass floors over a sheer drop, along with forest and wide views over the city and mountains; mist often wraps the mountain, giving it a legendary look. The all-in ticket is about CNY 288, including the cableway and buses, per visitor guides, and you need your passport to book. Allow a full day and bring a jacket, as the top is much colder than the city.
