One of Hainan's best-known and longest-famous sights, a rocky beach about 24 kilometres west of central Sanya whose name means «the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea»: the Chinese long saw it as the end of the earth in the far south, although the island's true southernmost point is Jinmu Cape. Huge smooth boulders lie scattered on the sand, carved with characters in Chinese calligraphy; the best known are the Tianya and Haijiao rocks and the «Pillar of the Southern Sky», which appeared on the two-yuan note of China's fourth banknote series. Chinese poetry tied the place to faithfulness, «I will follow you to the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea» being a promise never to part, so Chinese newlyweds come here for photos; among its rocks are the «Sun and Moon» pair standing side by side as a symbol of husband and wife. Entry is free with a compulsory advance booking under your own name, capped at 30,000 visitors a day, and electric carts inside cost about CNY 25 return, per visitor guides. The site is exposed to the sun, so go in the morning or before sunset.
