Tibau is a small beach town of about 5,400 people at the far north of Rio Grande do Norte, the state's last coastal town before Ceará, some 40 kilometres from Mossoró on the «Costa Branca». Its history goes back to February 1641, when a Dutch navigator reached it during the Dutch invasion and named it «Red Hill» for its salt pans and many-coloured sands, red above all. Its land was granted as a sesmaria in 1708. It is known for its cliffs and multicoloured sands, which artisans layer into pictures and decorated bottles, and for calm beaches facing the ocean. It is a nearby summer retreat for Mossoró, living from fishing and farming, including melons and watermelons.
