The Titisee is a lake in the southern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, southwest Germany, about 25 km east of Freiburg in a straight line. It covers 1.3 square kilometres and averages 20 metres deep. It was formed by the Feldberg glacier, whose moraines from the ice age now form its shores. The River Gutach flows out of it at 840 metres above sea level, so its water eventually reaches the Rhine. On its north shore lies the resort town of the same name, now part of the municipality of Titisee-Neustadt. Calm blue water is ringed by hills of dark fir forest and green meadows, with hotels and houses with wooden balconies along the shore. In summer white excursion boats and small rowing boats cross the water. Visitors walk the path around the lake, about 7 km long, hire rowing boats or take cruises, and swim in summer. Shops selling cuckoo clocks and cafés serving Black Forest gateau line the promenade, and the Feldberg, the Black Forest's highest peak, is close by.
