A natural cave on the flank of **Mount Hum** used as the **command post of the Yugoslav Partisan movement** in the summer of 1944 — a political site more than a natural one. In June 1944 Axis forces had closed on **Josip Broz Tito''s** headquarters in Bosnia and he was nearly captured in a German airborne operation. He was flown out by a Soviet aircraft to Italy and then moved to **Vis**, the only Adriatic island never taken by the Axis — it was held by the Partisans with British naval support. Tito directed the movement''s operations from this cave for about three months and held meetings here with British representatives, among them **Randolph Churchill**, the prime minister''s son, who served as a liaison officer on the island. The cave itself is plain: a rock hollow with a wide mouth, holding a table, benches and interpretation. What gives it weight is what happened in it rather than what is in it. Note: access is by an unsurfaced road and then a **15-20 minute climb on foot**. Note: **open and free with no staff and no hours** — you may find it entirely empty.

The island is full of them after forty years as a closed base. The most striking are the **submarine tunnels** — passages cut into the rock at sea level where submarines and boats hid, the best known in **Rogačić** bay, some enterable by boat or by swimming. Then **gun positions** and bunkers on the high ground, and the **old airstrip** in the island''s middle, used in the Second World War to land damaged Allied aircraft. And the British **Fort George** of 1813 above Vis town. ⚠ Many of these sites are **unsecured** — dark tunnels with no lighting and open shafts; guided tours by off-road vehicle are the sensible way to see them. ⚠ Do not enter any tunnel alone without a torch.
