Tiveden National Park lies in the Tiveden forest between the municipalities of Laxå and Karlsborg in central Sweden, about 68 km west of Linköping in a straight line. It protects wild forest over rugged terrain. The park was set up in 1983 with 1,350 hectares and, after an extension in 2017, now covers 2,030 hectares, managed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and Örebro County. In the early Middle Ages the Tiveden forest was a hiding place for outlaws. Dense pine forest spreads over rocky hills, scattered with huge moss-covered boulders and fields of tumbled rock. Small clear lakes lie among the trees, the largest being Stora Trehörningen, with a white sandy beach on its shore, and narrow boardwalks cross the boggy ground. Visitors follow marked trails among the rocks and lakes and relax on the sandy beach in summer. The ground is rough in many places, so wear good walking shoes and bring water and food.
