An old town now part of greater Guadalajara, long famous for crafts: decorated pottery and ceramics, blown glass, sculpture and furniture, and silver. Its cobbled streets and colourful colonial houses make it a favourite outing for locals and visitors alike. Its heart is pedestrian Calle Independencia, sometimes hung with coloured umbrellas and lined with art galleries, craft shops and the regional ceramics museum, with modern bronze sculptures on the pavements. Many well-known artists have galleries here. In the middle of town is El Parián, a large, partly covered square ringed by restaurants, with a central stage where mariachi bands play in the afternoon; Guadalajara and the state of Jalisco are the home of this famous Mexican music. Beside it is the quiet Jardín Hidalgo. The best time to visit is from the afternoon into the evening, when the shops are open and the music starts. Jalisco's famous dishes are served here, many with pork, so ask about ingredients.
