To Sua is a deep round hole in the ground near Upolu's south coast, with a pool of clear turquoise water at the bottom. Its rock walls are draped in plants and hanging roots, and a long wooden ladder leads down to a small platform on the water. The trench formed when the roof of an old lava tube collapsed, leaving a large opening linked to the sea by a tunnel under the rock, so ocean water flows in and out with the tide. Around it is a tidy garden on a clifftop over the ocean. You climb down the steep wooden ladder to the platform and swim in the clear water, looking up at the sky and trees from the bottom. On the nearby cliff edge you watch waves crash on the rocks, with a palm leaning over the sea. To Sua is about 32 km in a straight line south-east of Apia. A 2020 listing gives entry at 20 tala for adults and 10 for children aged 6 to 11, open 08:30 to 17:00 and Sunday afternoons. The ladder is slippery and the water is deep, so do not go down if you cannot swim well.
