A long lake between forested mountains, nicknamed the «Emerald Lake» for its clear green water, ringed by conical Osorno, pointed Puntiagudo and ice-capped Tronador volcanoes. No road runs along it, so its shores stay wild and quiet. From the Petrohué village pier, boats cross the lake to the village of Peulla at its far end in about two hours among mountains and hanging waterfalls, part of the famous Andean Crossing that links boats and buses to Bariloche in Argentina. For those not wanting the long trip there are short boat tours from Petrohué, kayaking and shore trails to small beaches of black volcanic sand. Petrohué has a few lodges and small restaurants. The weather is often rainy and clouds can hide the volcanoes, so pick a clear day and book the Andean Crossing ahead.
