Japan's oldest national museum and its largest art museum, in Ueno Park. It collects art and cultural objects from across Asia, focusing on ancient and medieval Japanese art and the art of the Silk Road, with a large collection of Greco-Buddhist art. As of April 2023 it held about 120,000 cultural properties, including 89 National Treasures, around a tenth of all the art and craft works Japan has designated as National Treasures. About 3,000 pieces are on show at a time, rotating every four to eight weeks. The displays spread across several buildings on one campus, above all the Honkan main building with its sweeping Japanese roof, home to Japanese art from swords and armour to ceramics, paintings and costume; the European-style Hyōkeikan from the imperial era; and a gallery devoted to the treasures of Hōryū-ji temple. Admission is 1,000 yen; it opens 9:30-17:00, until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and closes on Mondays, according to its official site. Special exhibitions cost extra, and the surrounding Ueno Park has more museums, a zoo and a pond.
