Tolhuin is a small town at the eastern end of Lake Fagnano, the largest lake on the island of Tierra del Fuego, and the only town on National Route 3 between Ushuaia (111 km south) and Río Grande (105 km north). Founded on 9 October 1972, it is the province's youngest town, and its name comes from the Selk'nam language, meaning «like a heart». Forests of lenga and ñire and glacial lakes surround it, and visitors come for kayaking, fishing and walks along the lakeshore, while nearby hills look out over the lake and the island. Its best-known stop is La Unión bakery, opened in 1985, which has become the meeting point for islanders and travellers, drawing thousands of visitors on weekends. Wandering is free; it is a natural stop on the overland trip between Ushuaia and Río Grande, or a day out with Lake Fagnano.
