The Tomás Terry Theatre is a historic theatre on the main square of Cienfuegos. A white and yellow facade of arches and columns is topped with gold-toned mosaic panels, and inside is an Italian-style auditorium with tiers of wooden boxes. Work began in December 1887 and it opened on 12 February 1890. It is named after Tomás Terry, a wealthy Cienfuegos man who helped conceive it but died before it was built. It is one of the eight great theatres of colonial Cuba, a National Monument, and stands in the historic centre of Cienfuegos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You see the facade and mosaics from the square, take a tour to see the auditorium, boxes and painted ceiling, or catch a concert or play in the evening. The theatre faces Parque José Martí in the heart of Cienfuegos. Ask at the door about tours and performances. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Cuba because of fuel, power and water shortages, so read the current advice before you plan.
