The Tomb of Ferdowsi is a white marble monument in Tus, dedicated to the Persian poet Ferdowsi, author of the Shahnameh. A square stepped building stands on a high base in a wide garden of long pools and trees, reflected in the water. Ferdowsi was born in Tus and died there in 1020 AD, and his daughter buried him in the garden of his house. For centuries his grave lay under a small dome, until the present tomb was built in the early 1930s, drawing on elements of Achaemenid architecture. A celebration of the poet's millennium was held with it, attended by scholars from many countries. You walk through the garden to the tomb and go down to the hall beneath it, where stone reliefs show scenes from the Shahnameh; there is also a small museum. It is about 22 km in a straight line northwest of central Mashhad. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to Iran and warns that British nationals risk detention, so check official guidance before making any plans.
